Overview
Embark on an exhilarating adventure through the heart of the Everest region with the Everest Base Camp Cho La Pass Gokyo trek, also known as the Everest Circuit Trail. This trek combines the thrill of conquering the high mountain pass, Cho La, at a breathtaking altitude of 5330 m/17487ft, with the exploration of two of the most sought-after routes in the Everest region – the trails to Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lake.
As you undertake the Everest Base Camp Cho La Pass Gokyo trek, prepare to be mesmerized by the awe-inspiring landscapes of the Everest zone. Marvel at the panoramic views of four of the world’s fourteen highest peaks, each towering above 8000 meters – Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8516 m), Makalu (8463m), and Cho Oyu (8201m). Your journey will be enriched by traversing Cho La Pass, ascending Gokyo Ri, and visiting pristine Gokyo Lake, Himalayan glaciers, Sherpa villages, and Buddhist monasteries.
Commencing with a short 35-minute flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, the trek follows the Dudh Kosi valley, passing through Phakding, Benkar, and Monjo to reach the iconic Namche Bazaar. Spend an extra day in Namche Bazaar, the capital of the Sherpas, for acclimatization to mitigate the risks of high altitude issues.
From Namche Bazaar, the trail diverges towards Everest Base Camp and Gokyo Lake. If Everest Base Camp is your first destination, follow the trail through Tengboche and Dingboche. In Dingboche, at an altitude of 4,260 m/13,980ft, take an additional day for acclimatization.
After two days of hiking from Dingboche, you’ll reach Everest Base Camp. Ascend to the top of Kalapathar (Alt. 5555m/18225ft) for a breathtaking 360-degree panorama of the world’s tallest mountains, including Everest, Lhotse, Pumori, Lobuche, Nuptse, and more. The true height of Everest becomes apparent from this vantage point.
Following the visit to Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar, retrace your steps to Lubuche and proceed to Cho La Pass. This challenging pass, standing at 5330 m/17487ft, leads to the descent into the enchanting Gokyo Lakes Valley.
Gokyo Lake, situated at an altitude of 4750 m, rests on the Ngozumpa glacial moraine and is the source of the Dudh Koshi River. Ascend Gokyo Ri (5,483 m) for a spectacular sunrise, revealing Cho Oyo, Ghyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu against the glacial backdrop. After Gokyo, return to Namche Bazaar via Machhermo and Dole, and from there, reach Lukla in one day. Conclude your trek in Lukla before flying back to Kathmandu, marking the end of an unforgettable journey through the Himalayas.
